This glimpse into a few of the "little lives" impacted by the terrible inequalities that exist is painful, eye-opening, and well worth a read by anyone who cares to know how others experience the world (Susan B). Most readers agree, Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a difficult but important and eye-opening read: There have been few books in my life that have stayed with me long after reading them - for instance, To Kill a Mockingbird and Angela's Ashes - and now I will add Behind the Beautiful Forevers to the list (Anne B). I have been inspired by this book (Karen J). Poverty, corruption, racism, economic envy, and brutal indifference toward human life pummel the inhabitants of Annawadi, Mumbai's undercity, yet amazingly, there exist pockets of hope and aspiration. It was not easy to read, yet not easily put down. Some books carry me along, this one pulled. The consensus is in: Katherine Boo's narrative nonfiction about corruption, struggle, and hope in Annawadi, India, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, is very popular with BookBrowse reviewers 30 out of 30 readers rate it 4 or 5 stars! Here's what people are saying: From Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo, a harrowing work of narrative nonfiction about life in Annawadi, India

Catharsis by Travis Bagwell6/25/2023 There are no real redeeming factors or rays of hope for him to look forward to, and so he seeks a means of escaping his existence, a prayer answered in the form of a new virtual reality game called Awaken Online. This turns them into a means of escape from reality that only becomes increasingly powerful as the technology allows the games to be more immersive… something our protagonist Jason discovers in Travis Bagwell‘s highly-acclaimed Awaken Online: Catharsis.Īs the story begins we are introduced to Jason, a man who is basically fed up with his reality, with his inability to influence it to his contentment. Video games are an especially interesting medium in that regard as they could potentially allow players an unprecedented control over their environment and the people in it. We simply accept that we cannot control all that much beyond ourselves and choose to go on with our lives while channeling these desires through various means, such as writing stories, making music… essentially, through any creative activity. For most of us, however, the ability to shape and manipulate the world is extremely limited by our tremendous lack of resources and relative unimportance in the eyes of others. The power to influence the world is something virtually every single person on Earth covets, dreaming of the fantasy world where their actions actually have a meaningful impact on everything. The teachings of don juan a yaqui way6/25/2023 The move is an extension of GOP school choice initiatives that favor charter over public schools. Based on these results, schools would be given several choices: independently improve their performance within three years, partner with a high-performing school that will take over operations, be replaced by a “Fresh Start” school with a proven academic track record, close down, or consolidate with a nearby school. No school grading was done between those years due to COVID-19 and the shift to remote learning. The new board would use performance data from the 2018-2019 school year and this year to identify struggling schools. Out-of-state charter school operators may also be welcomed into the district. This district is made up of high-performing district and charter schools handpicked by a nine-member board appointed by the governor. House Bill 2808 establishes the Arizona Achievement District. In 2019, there were 180 Arizona schools that received a D or F rating and new legislation given preliminary approval by the House would hand over their operations or shut them down if they don’t improve.

Poirot death on the nile6/24/2023 While Death on the Nile is technically a sequel, watching Murder on the Orient Express is not essential. Saunders plays the wealthy American socialite Marie Van Schuyler and French appears as Van Schuyler’s nurse and traveling companion, known only as Bowers. The English comedic duo, Jennifer Saunders ( Absolutely Fabulous) and Dawn French (T he Vicar of Dibley) are reunited in the movie as well. They’re intentionally and quite suspiciously vague as to where in Europe he is from. Carl Bessner, a famous European physician. Sophie Okonedo ( Wheel of Time) and Letitia Wright ( Black Panther) play mother and daughter duo Salome and Rosalie Otterbourne, with the former a singer hired to perform at the Doyles' wedding. Rose Leslie ( Game of Thrones) is Louise Bourget, Linnet’s chambermaid who joins the newlyweds on their honeymoon.Īnnette Bening as Euphemia Bouc, Bouc’s mother and painter, a character written for this adaptation specifically.Įmma Mackey ( Sex Education) as Jacqueline de Bellefort, Linnet’s former friend and Simon’s former fiancé (both characteristics of a lead suspect).

This list is mainly focused on English language editions, but there are also a few foreign language editions because they are just too stunning to leave out. The illustrated bibliography below therefore includes only those editions that really stand out in some special way. Including them all in this list would be a daunting task, and to my mind maybe not so useful, as some are much more beautiful than others. There are hundreds and hundreds of different illustrated versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Camp by kayla miller6/24/2023 She was eager (sometimes too eager) to compromise her enjoyment for Willow’s comfort. I also admired her, because she was far more graceful and kinder that I might have been at her age. Friendships are hard when you’re a middle schooler, and as someone who had a somewhat clingy best friend at that age, I felt for Olive. I really liked the premise of this graphic novel. Eventually, though, things start to get to her and the girls’ friendship becomes strained. Worse still, she tries to hold Olive back from making other friends or joining different activities, becoming sulky and giving her the silent treatment when she does.Īt first, Olive handles things well, making compromises and forgoing opportunities to hang out with other campers just to keep Willow happy. As soon as the girls arrive, Olive jumps right into the friend-making and activities, but Willow is as adept as making friends and instead wants to follow Olive everywhere. She’s looking forward to doing camp things and making new friends. In Camp by Kayla Miller, Olive is excited to be going to summer camp this year, especially since her best friend Willow is also going.
